EUA*
One of the most wonderful things I find in the USA is the American society’s ability to self-criticize and update itself. I do not report to its government known for approximately 100 years for being imperialist, promoting invasions of other countries and coups d’état. Despite all the pertinent criticisms (competitiveness, egocentricity and consumerism are some of them) it is dynamic and creative, thanks to its thriving democracy with broad freedom of expression; the American society is always in search of self-development and truth no matter who it hurts in the midst of the apparent chaos in the face of the multiplicity of antagonistic interests or pressure from the government, industry or financial market, that is, the invisible hand of the system for profit and power. The search for justice and social equality prevails. Thus, it constantly analyzes itself and is not afraid to admit and expose its errors and contradictions, and mercilessly apply public punishment to those who offend it, even if it is Post Mortem in its perennial historical revisionism.Paulo Rebelo, doctor, writer and poet.
