THE LEAF*

THE LEAF
by Paulo Rebelo

An eternal existential anguish,
Atrocious eagerness
In the labyrinths of life…

Time
runs against the human being
And he searches for living a life that he has never lived,
Life that doesn’t satisfy him,
An endless incompleteness.

Then,
freedom is a feeling
Such is the voluptuousness,
A meager word to define what the soul is looking for
Amidst the vastness of nothingness.

Uncertainties ensue,
Whose only guarantee
It’s just that nothing is everlasting,
Everything is so obscure,
Eternally fleetingly.

Thus,
he is like a leaf
Fallen from a tree,
blown by the wind
to realize
of frugality
and fragility
Of life…

Paulo Rebelo, the poet doctor.
